CD Reviews

The best from her peak years
Peter Durward Harris | Leicester England | 04/08/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Lacy's voice is reminiscent of Tanya Tucker's, but richer. It may be significant that Lacy's most successful years coincided with Tanya's period in the wilderness, but both of them are magnificent singers whose music has given me a lot of pleasure. This collection includes all her important hits from her period with Columbia from 1980 to 1986, plus three of her Universal / Capitol tracks from 1989. Among those hits is her debut, Crazy blue eyes, her signature song, 16th avenue and excellent covers of Tennessee waltz and Dream baby. There are a couple of duets here - It's a dirty job (with Bobby Bare) and Size seven round (with George Jones). Slow moving outlaw, a duet with Willie Nelson, is missing but can be found on some of his compilations. Hillbilly girl with the blues is a song that Lacy wrote about herself. Hard times, though not written by Lacy, is clearly something that she understands through bitter experience. This is by far the strongest compilation yet released of Lacy's music, but there are still plenty of gems that have yet to appear on CD."
Hillbilly Girl knows The Blues

"Those Crazy Blue Eyes, those mavericks that don't settle down. That Hillbillly Girl With the Blues. She's been beating those Hard Times with that voice that ranges from a sexy whiskey voice to a Whisper that tingles your spine.Lacy can bounce you around and get your foot stomping or she can share a broken heart with you. She is raucus and she is mellow. She can growl or purr like a kitten.Anthology puts her best together. Crazy Blue Eyes has to be the best of the lot but how do you pass up Tennesee Waltz, Hard Times, Whisper and my second favorite Hillbilly Girl with the Blues.Lacy is a true queen of country."
