CD Reviews

A power pop gem

"What is unfortunate is that La Gusana Ciega are only stars in Mexico and Latin America, why? Because they are excellent songwriters, arrangers and musicians, yet they don't sing in English for the most part/ most people in the US wouldn't give them the time of day. La Gusana Ciega is a live album in which they play their greatest hits(although just about every single song they have written is good). Bands can either sound exactly as the cd when they play live, or they can show their shortcomings as a band outside of the studio, or they can work with the songs and give them a new beat, a different spin to improve in a live perfomance. La Gusana has done that in this recording. "las manos de maria la loca" in its original release is a very fast song, here they slow it down to an almost country skip or twang, great stuff. As another reviewer mentioned, they added strings to some of the song to make them sound different from the original release, it works very well! " Cancion a Merlina" is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard. The live version is better than in the studio. All of their cds are great, I had to find an online store in Mexico to buy Super Bee and Merlina(their first two releases)Correspondencia Interna I bought here in the US. These guys are a great rock band...not just a Latin- American band. I feel I'm lucky that I know about this band, I'm passing on CDs from Latin- American labeled bands to non-Spanish speaking friends and they are finding a whole new world of very talented bands they did not know. If you love power pop/rock bands this is it! Listen to Celofan or 727 on this CD, great stuff.

UPDATE: La Gusana Ciega broke up, so sad!

UPDATE: 3 years later, there is sense to the universe they have reunited!!!!!!"
The complete Gusana treat

"I have all the albums in the 11 year history of "La Gusana Ciega", this album is not only a good selection of their best and their most public-known songs, it was recorded live which gives the extra punch La Gusana usually has in their on-stage performances and it gives their hits a twist with a nice detail of instrumental chords. The overall result, a sober, highly intense sound with a well balanced mixture of songs. As an extra feature, a couple of on-studio recordings which include the first english spoken song for La Gusana "Sunday Fever", and probably their most pop-oriented song to date, surely to be an all time fan favorite "Tornasol"."

"I first heard of La Gusana Ciega from the whatcha tour. Their live performance was amazing that I had to go out and buy the cd. Needless to say I was not disappointed, with their songs like "tornasol" and "celofan" it has such great energy and rhythm! If you like rock and pop this cd is great!"
