CD Reviews

Sugarland
John | West Hampstead United Kingdom | 02/14/2000
(3 out of 5 stars)

"Think New Order without a Joy Division hangover. It's upbeat and lively without a darker side. The tracks are all solid pop tunes which make a good album, but it never reaches greatness. My copy of this does not include the Big Man Restless Remix. This is my favourite track on KTP's debut "Naked" which I would highly recommend over this if you can lay your hands on it. "Naked" has a darker, more industrial sound to it. Still if you like KTP's early stuff, you should enjoy this."

"
Yes ,the first KTP Naked album is their best but Sugarland does represent something of a late peak . They'd caught some of the dance music flavour of the times and upped sticks from native UK to record it in Texas at the behest of a fan and without a producer for the first time . Lack of synchronicity with intervening producers since Naked having been a big problem .

Also on this album the vocal duties were shifted to a different member of the band George, with a smoother more earfriendly delivery that suits the material well . 'George Foreman's' a hit,the other tracks work very well too . The band learned they could become serious producers and went on to become regular chart visitors producing other acts .

Recommended .

A truly excellent album

"the sugarland album was born from a series of demos of addictive dance tracks the band made in 1989 when their ever-diminishing line-up was gradually being replaced with programmable synthesizers and drum machines. since their earliest days kissing the pink had been interested in making various pop genres dance-friendly, and with sugarland they took on psychedelic pop. george stewart's perfect vocals are the cherry on the cake, but the drum beats, sinister synths, and lyrics are all essential to the album's success. (the lyrics contrast New Age woo-woo with what i guess you'd call biting social criticism of the USA). yikes-- out of time-- sorry, i have to appear on a tortilla in mexico..."
