"Dub music, largely considered the preserve of the very young or very stoned, has irrespective of short sighted categorization, predated the concept of remix albums by about 30 years. And one of the pioneers of Dub music was undoubtedly `King Tubby' (Osbourne Ruddock) and sound engineer, whose splicing of reggae tapes and generally stripping them of vocals and layering various sound effects and reverbing the sound and advanced looping techniques gave birth to the Dub genre. King Tubby has been a incredibly prolific artists releasing some 30 or so albums, so finding something that encapsulates his best work, was always going to be a major headache. Although this release is easily amongst the best compilation cd's of his work, it collates his work from the seminal 1974 seminal "Dub form the Roots" album, and seems to take in the majority of his work around his most creative period (the mid-late 70's). For something that's so rigidly built around echoed sound and reverberating bass, King Tubby sidesteps monotony by imbuing each track with a seemingly endless array of bewildering samples that can range from instruments (such as Horns, Drums, organs, Trumpet....etc) to produce something with a remarkable amount of space and renasonce, that defy's it's 70's production techniques.This actually album release is actually an expanded re-release of the highly regarding "King Tubby - King Dub" 2000 compilation, that includes all the 15 tracks from the original release, but only includes a further 5 rarely anthologised tracks on the end, which armed with this information, would make buying the 2000 original release redundant, especially as the added tracks sit perfectly alongside the original tracks. There is No one `definitive' King Tubby compilation as Tubby produced far too much worthwhile material to fit on one cd (or indeed two), but with this, and the other completely essential compilation albums "Dub Gone Crazy: The Evolution of Dub at King Tubby's 1975-1977", "Dub Gone 2 Crazy" & the double Cd re-release of "Roots of Dub/Dub from the Roots", anyone looking to encapsulate the very best of Tubby, with be well served with these albums."
