CD Reviews

5 star Kiki
Gaz | England | 06/25/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Kiki has got to be one of the most underrated singers (not to mention song writers) we have in Britain. Loving and Free is still a UK radio classic and Sugar on the Floor is such a gem it's no wonder Elton covered it. Kiki is re-releasing her back catalogue and has just set up a web site kikidee.co.uk - but check out her new stuff too! This album contains some fab tracks. Buy it. Oh, and if you get a chance, see Kiki live. One of the best acts I've ever seen!"
Lost classic

"I have been after Loving & Free for years on CD. It is a beautiful album with the highlights being Amourese, Loving & Free, Sugar On The Floor and her excellent version of Jackson Browne's Song For Adam. I am desperate to have this and I hope it will be available soon.I will keep looking."
Brilliant singer never made the big time
Peter Durward Harris | Leicester England | 04/13/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Although Kiki Dee (born Pauline Matthews) had several UK hits, she will primarily be remembered for her two duets with Elton John - Don't go breaking my heart (a number one UK hit in 1976) and True love (a number two UK hit in 1992), but True love is not included in this collection, which is limited to her seventies music. One of her biggest solo hits, Star, and one of her minor hits, Perfect timing, are also missing as they are from 1981.

As a solo singer, Kiki never made the UK top ten, though she came close with Amoureuse (her best-known solo track) and Loving and free. Kiki had another UK top twenty hit with I got the music in me, plus minor UK hits in the seventies with You don't know how glad I am, First thing in the morning and Chicago.

Kiki had spent ten years as a recording artist without success as a recording artist, establishing a reputation for great covers of R+B songs that resulted in her becoming the first white British artist to be signed to Motown, but the partnership was unsuccessful. However, she continued to cover R+B material after she left Motown, as this compilation shows via such songs as Ain't nothing like the real thing and Stay with me.

Kiki Dee is one of those artists that is more respected by the critics than the public, who (for whatever reason) never bought her music in sufficient quantities to make her a big star. A best of set containing all her hits up to True love was issued some years ago, but this is now out of print."
