CD Reviews

Flower of Scotland
Thomas Schimonitz | Columbia, Missouri USA | 08/04/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I have most of the Corries on tapes. Most of these I have picked up on my visits to Scotland. I picked up Flower of Scotland, on tape, last year and have almost wore it out. The Corries specialize in historic ballads with nationalistic overtones, such as Stiling Brig (bridge), the Black Douglas and others, but they also mix in mythical legends and humorous ballads. You must also watch out for their wee little songs that sneak in here and there. As much as I like their ballads, on this CD, I was most impressed with the song Mothers, Daughters, Wives. It deals with the wars of the 20th century and a woman's place, from a woman's point of view. I think this has become my favorite song from the Corries. Through most of their tapes, they have a common good natured banter going on between them, however you realize that there is a visual piece missing from the performance. If your into Celtic ballads, 'Flower of Scotland' and 'Live at Royal Lyceum Theatre', both from the Corries, are must haves."
