Synopsis

Most casual listeners don't immediately think of Turkey when they think of Gypsy music, but that country has always been one of the spawning grounds for the music of the Indo-European culture of the Gypsies. The rich and wonderful style of çifetelli and karsilama, best known as belly-dance music, goes way beyond those lounge records from the '40s and '50s. Kemani Cemal Çinareli is one of the contemporary masters of this rich musical heritage, a violinist of high skill and deep understanding. Backed by an ensemble of oud, darbuka (hourglass drum), kanun (hammered zither), and some searing clarinet from Bigali Ahmet, Kemani Cemal pulls a varied collection of wild shrieks, slides, and rapid-fire trills from his violin, creating beauty and tension to drive the dancers (and the CD listener) on and on. Well recorded and very well remastered, these recordings offer a contemporary look at an ages-old musical tradition that still thrives and grows in Istanbul. --Louis Gibson

"I am an intermediate Raks sharki dancer and I prefer traditional and original as possible music. This is one of those CD's, you can feel the zills popping out of your chest, or the serpent taking over your hips...trully beautiful turkish music for those who love and love to dance traditional, non-pop, non-synthetic, happy, sensual music. I would also highly recommend Music of Islam vol 1, another original cd loaded with beautiful music, all traditional from Egypt. Just beautiful hip music. Another one: El-Fonoun, original, beautiful and traditional Palestinian music."

"Violinist (i.e. kemane- close enough for Turkey!) Kemani Cemal (pronounced 'je-mal') is probably one of the greatest living masters of Turkish music. Along with singer Berguzar and others he's recorded an album which is bound to be an enduring classic. The surface simplicity of this music hides its wheels-within-wheels churning of melody and rhythm. Only thing better than catching this album is catching Kemani Cemal live."

"Grrrrreat Cd, fabulous musicians & too bad the only dancing you see is on the cover... -Hope we can see them play live some day, incl. rhine stones in their belly buttons. -A must have for every world music fan."
