CD Reviews

Kelis Vs. Vasquez
Adrian Thacker | 07/09/2000
(4 out of 5 stars)

"So you may have already read my scathing review of Kelis's first single "Caught Out There", and you may think that I have it out for Kelis. Well, I had noticed that "Good Stuff" was climbing up the Billboard Dance Chart and was only available as a promo. So when I saw an import single with the Junior Vasquez mix on it, I picked it up. Good purchase. Kelis has redeemed herself in my books. Track listing on this cd is as follows:1) Album Version - 3:52 - a good r&b groover produced by The Neptunes (who also produced her first single "Caught Out There"). A much more user-friendly single than the first. A good chill out song. Although the rap in the middle by Terrar is not needed.2) Forces Of Nature Radio Edit Mix - 3:23 - this is the first remix that I have seen by Forces Of Nature. They speed up Kelis's vocals and put a jungly beat behind her and throw in alot of housey pianos. It is not a horrible mix, but it seems to have alot going on and does not always work. 3) Junior's Transatlantic Mix - 11:02 - this is the good stuff. Junior's remix is eleven minutes of brilliance. He doesn't touch Kelis's vocals at all, but rather builds up the music towards them. The beats are fierce and will work you into a dancefloor frenzy. The music would best be described as house with a bit of trance. He builds his way up to her vocals, then when Kelis starts to sing the verses he drops down to some background instrumentation until she gets to the chorus and he begins to bring the beats back so we can kick up our heels. This one reminds me of Junior's mix of kd lang's "Theme From The Valley Of The Dolls" - not lyrically, just beat wise. This cd is an interactive disc, which includes the music video for "Good Stuff" HIGHLY RECOMMENDED."
