CD Reviews

My 27 year old vinyl sounds bettter.

"I am the proud owner of 1 Keef Hartley Band vinyl recording, "The Time is Near." For the last 10 years, I have been searching for a CD version of this album. I'll keep on searching, thank you.Considering the state of digital technology and the possibilities of what can be done to enhance master tapes, the people who produced this CD must have just been released from jail. The tracks are of live performances by the band from the 60's and 70's. Unless we're talking about recording using a portable Sony tape deck and a condenser mike, there is no excuse for the garage level sound and the $17.00 price tag. While I plan to leave my copy of "The Time is Near" to my son after I pass on, I will donate "Not Foolish Not Wise" to the next Public Radio or library sale -- at least I'll get tax credit for a donation.Wait for a CD reissue of the "The Time is Near." "Not Foolish Not Wise" sucks."
Where is "Halfbreed" ?

"Keef Hartley's "Halfbreed" - a wonderful slice of late 60's UK R&B... but where is it ?This album's track listing includes "Sinnin' For You" and "Just A Cry" which, assuming they're the originals (on "Halfbreed" the second track is listed as "Just To Cry"), are two of the standout tracks from a long forgotten album. Not massively popular at the time, "Halfbreed" was a natural extension of Keef Hartley's, Henry Lowther's and Chris Mercer's work with John Mayall - including the marvellous "you're sacked" telephone conversation with Mayall as the album's opener, followed by a superb jazz/blues jam in "Hearts And Flowers", "Confusion Theme" & "The Halfbreed". "Halfbreed" is a great album - previously released in the UK via "Deram 8209782" - worth hearing, re-releasing and four stars... two stars for this one only on the basis of these two superb tracks."

"I still recall the excitement I felt two years ago in anticipation of what appeared to be a superlative compilation of some of Keef's best cuts from his distinguished, albeit underappreciated discography. Although the Keef Hartley Band deserves a box set, I felt that at least a solid compilation will suffice for those of us who loved this band for 30+ years. WRONG!!!!! What we have here is a travesty. The production values (at least in my Mooncrest CD) are an outrage. Granted, this was recorded in live performances. But, be warned. Unless you are the most hardcore of fans (and I am one too) this rip-off CD will only further exacerbate your sense of frustration that one of the greatest British Blues groups of the 60's remains the best kept secret (along with Love Sculpture) of the genre."
