CD Reviews

Kayah rules...

"I have all her CD's. And I was addicted to her even before she started her solo career. She was the "background" voice on many Polish hits in the '80 and '90. Then came "Kamien", a beautiful and sad and difficult record that almost no-one bought. Then she gave us "Zebra", great music and wonderful lyrics. And of course "Kayah&Bregovic", great success and fame. I love "K&B". She sounded so mature there and her lyrics were so beautiful. I could not wait for a new album. And my friend sent it to me as soon as it was released. I listend to it once, twice and more times. And I LOVE it. Kayah is an ARTIST. She did not go the easy way. She did something that surprised everyone. Her new music is a revelation. A great mix of "dansy" songs and beautiful ballads. But it's not pop music we all know from any radio station. It's very different. Different styles and moods even within one song. And again beautiful and meaningful lyrics. Kayah, thank you for doing all this. Your music means so much to me. And by the way, listen to her voice and style. She said a long time ago that she learnt a lot from the Queen of Soul. And you can hear that. My favorites at the moment: "Aniol Wiedzial", "Za Blisko", "Nie Wiedzialam", "Jak Ja Kayah", "Nie Patrzysz"... Just cannot wait for the promised bonus CD with the remixes and the duet with Cesaria Evora... Kayah, nie pozwol nikomu Cie zmienic. Love. Piotr P.S. Dzieki za te video clipy, nie mialem szansy obejrzenia 2 z nich przedtem. "Prawy do lewego" bardzo smieszny. I uwielbiam projekt okladki. Piekne oczy!."

"If any artist deserves international exposure and acclaim, it's Kayah, Poland's most popular female pop star. An ingeniously versatile singer and songwriter who changes musical styles almost as often as hairstyles, she's Eastern Europe's answer to Madonna, only with better pipes and genuine songwriting talent. In fact, she's so good, she puts other Polish musical exports, like the nasally-afflicted Basia, to shame. On "Jaka Ja Kayah," her latest solo album, Kayah showcases her phenomenal talent by creating an alluring hybrid of techno, jazz, and pop balladry. With its Middle Eastern grooves, the album's title track echoes the sound of last year's smash-hit album in Poland "Kayah i Bregovic," a gypsy-inflected blend of Polish and Balkan folk music recorded with Croatian composer Goran Bregovic. Deeper into the new record, the lovely ballad "Nie Wiedzialam (o synku)" sets velvety vocals and contemplative lyrics to mellow sax riffs, while other tracks pump out infectious techno and dance beats. Throughout, Kayah's strong, emotive voice and innovative songcraft propel the album, and for those lucky enough to know Polish, her artful lyrics add another layer of depth to an already accomplished work. A great album for fans of world pop, who should enjoy discovering this exciting new star on the rise."
