CD Reviews

They did it again
02/28/2001
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Karnak continues its creative journey, as someone said in a previous review, "departing in all musical directions, sometimes simultaneously". Starting with a "Russian Overture", the songs include pop made out from Pachelbel's Canon in "Juvenal", salsa in "Estamos Adorando Tokio" and "Feio Bonito", funk/soul in "Aliens in LA", bluesy rock in "Solereseuseforso/Nuvem Passageira", and so on. Non-brazilian listeners to "Maria Ines" will think of it as a strange kind of rap, when in fact is a Brazilian rithm known as "embolada". None of these classifications, however, quite define what you'll hear, the elements on the arrangements are varied enough to make each musical genre sound as new. Lyrics are almost as good as the music. Although they are in Portuguese, English speakers are not left totally alone here, as there are quite some incidental talk and lyric portions in English. The bottom line is: they did it again, another album to listen from the first to the last track."
Brazil's best band.

"It just amazes me that this band isn't huge, coz noone is doing what they do. Almost every track on this CD is brilliantly crafted pop, with great vocals, brilliant production and the trademark KARNAK weirdness. I think I hear Prokofiev in one tune, polka/bossa in another. If you need more baroque harpsichord in your dance music, now you know where to turn. KARNAK RULE - basta. BTW - the first CD rules too."
