CD Reviews

Good stuff

"I ran into Karen Posten as an opener for Slaid Cleaves. She had only two of her Crystal Pistols band with her but it was plenty. Powerful voice, great songs, very professional. Belts out her tunes with a real fine country flair. This record contains some good music and it's nicely produced. Highly recommended."
Debut from Austin-based country singer/songwriter

"Karen Poston's been brewing in the Austin underground for several years now. She first came to the public's attention with her harmony work on Dale Watson's 1996 release "Blessed or Damned," and more widely as a member of Ted Roddy's Tearjoint Troubadours. Several of her songs graced Roddy's "Tear Time," and Slaid Cleaves recorded "Lydia," Poston's tale of Appalachian coal-mining and the ruined lives often left in its wake.Several Austin luminaries (Kelly Willis, Roger Wallace, Roddy and Cleaves) pitch in with her band, The Crystal Pistols, for Poston's debut. Over ten originals and two covers (the waltz-time "It Only Hurts for a Little While," and Liz Anderson's "Ride Ride Ride"), she sings in a voice that's often mindful of fellow Texan Libbi Bosworth (though with a bit more of Ronnie Spector's warble). Her songs swing from simple two-steps to metaphorical rumination, often delving into the lives of women, present and past. It's a unique lyrical perspective, given voice by yet another singular talent from the Austin scene."
