Synopsis

Album Description
Like a mind-boggling combination of Summer of Love acid-rock, goodtime saloon music and a Middle Eastern jam session, Side Trips, the debut album by Kaleidoscope, stood out, even in the eye of the psychedelic hurricane, as something altogether different! Staffed by a hall of fame roster of multi-instrumentalists--David Lindley, Chris Darrow, Solomon Feldthouse, Chester Crill (aka: Fenrus Epp) and John Vidican--this San Gabriel Valley, Calif.-based combo cut their dazzling 1967 album with a startling arsenal of instruments that included banjo, fiddle, doumbeg, mandolin, viola, saz, bouzoukee, dobro, vina, authoharp, oud and clarinet. When they entertained the wide-eyed customers of San Francisco's Fillmore and Avalon Ballrooms and Los Angeles' Ash Grove, they frequently employed flamenco and belly dancers onstage. Just like the see-through tube with bits of colored glass and mirrors that gave the band their name, the Kaleidoscope was never the same, no matter which way you turned it!

World-music in psychedelic era?

(4 out of 5 stars)

"The strange lineup that includes a dulcimer player produce some of the most interesting world-music in psychedelic ear."Egyptian Garden" gave you the idea of what it is, the strange scale that's never heard of in rock is employed here, great. other tracks like "oh death" and "why try" are quite different... great 30 minutes of music. But unfortunately the CD remastering is quite poor, so it just worth 4 stars."
Great Californian Psychedelia

"This is a very solid set considering it's Kaleidoscope's first release. They're command of exotic instruments is often impressive making this an eclectic listening experience. Of the 10 songs, 7 are very good to excellent while 3 good time jug band songs are comparatively weak. These jug band songs give the band some eclectic depth but also hurt the album from attaining truly classic status. Many California bands had roots in jug bands which explains why these songs are included on such albums. Oh Death is a solid and early venture into American roots music. Keep Your Mind Open is often considered a psychedelic classic while Please is an excellent slice of folk rock (its been covered many times). Just think of the Byrds from they're classic 5th Dimension and Younger Than Yesterday albums. Thats the kind of sound we're dealing with on this album. Its a solid addition to any 60's rock record collection. I also recommend Kaleidoscopes 2nd (Beacon) and 3rd (The Incredible) albums if you like this release (althought the band jams more on later albums)."
