Synopsis

Light tenor from Ecuador interprets classical boleros--slow, mostly acoustic ballads spinning tales of love's misadventures. "No la Dejes Marchar" rings with its flamenco-ish guitar, while "Alguien Me Espera" fascinates with its frank lyrics to a soon-to-be ex-girlfriend. Jaramillo injects a little rock & roll energy into the brisk "Que Culpa Tengo," while "Llegastes" rides on a wave of crisp percussion as he details the wondrous arrival of true love. Jaramillo wrote all 12 tracks and sticks pretty much to the formula--brooding reflections on love's many stances. From doubts and regrets to hopes and fears, his fragile but emotive vocals convey it all. The occasional '60s-era organ riffs and bright trumpets provide a change of pace, but otherwise these are basic saloon boleros to drink by on a late afternoon. --Ramiro Burr
