CD Reviews

Great album by Julieta
Andres C. Salama | Buenos Aires, Argentina | 03/16/2007
(4 out of 5 stars)

"I only recently become familiar with Venegas' music, despite the fact that she has been making albums for more than 10 years. This is her latest CD and is really great. What can one say: she writes her own songs (and those songs are really good, with catchy music and clever lyrics dealing mainly with the ups and downs in the relations between the sexes), she plays many instruments, she tries her hand with many musical styles (pop, rock, rap, Mexican folk, even tango). Her early albums were much more on the punk/rock side; she has softened her sound on her last two albums (though not the quality of the music). Some have criticized her for "selling out". Do not listen to them, Julieta. This is great music, with many great songs: the hit song "Me Voy" (great video, by the way), "Limon y Sal", "A Donde Sea", "Eres para Mi", "Mirame bien". Her album is both highly artistic and very listenable. Don't miss this one."
A little bit of everything!

"If you like a CD with a wide range of sound, this is for you! Julieta Venegas has a rich, raspy voice that compliments any musical style. Some songs have a hip-hop feel to them, while others could almost be described as country music. Of course there's a definite Latino vibe throughout... This CD is one you can just put in the player and let it go, without having to hit the skip button."
Crafty, Irresistible Alt-Pop at its BEST

"Venegas is so good, in so many ways (singer, songwriter, instrumentalist), that the appeal of her songs crosses any ethnic musical "border." This being noted, the "latinisma" of her work is truly defining to her artistry. I don't see her music as having "gone commercial" at all. Her lyrics are too clever and incisive, her melodies too uncanny. This is not "commercial" music in that it plays to some basic, common denominator. It's SOUL music that is able to find widespread appeal because everyone with a real soul can relate. That's what the very best music is able to do--whether pop, rock, classical, alternative, jazz, what have you. Venegas is able to weave a tapestry of brilliance on this album with an amazing versatility that comes from her proficiency of gifts. Every track is superb to the ear and to the spirit. From the liberation and anthemic determination of "Me Voy," the almost Bjork-ish wisdom of "Limon y Sal," to the sensual urgency of "Es Para Mi," Venegas proves why she is one of the great, truly potent artists of contemporary Latin music. Mexico should be very proud. This woman has managed to be truly artistic and, simultaneously, listenable for a wide range of human beings. Not many can pull that off. The album is a knockout--enchanting and absolutely brimming with VIDA!

If a powerful musical celebration of the human spirit is "commercial," then this album proves that there is a very worthy and noble side to "commercial," too. Pop at it's best, and when it's THIS good, you don't NEED alternatives."
