Jazz Fusion Confection
10/02/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This is a terrific fusion confection from the era when Roberts topped the jazz charts. Though her gorgeous recent acoustic work ("In the Moment") is preferred in some ways, this disc is irresistible. The very produced sound, with multi-tracked vocals, multiple keyboards and synthesizers, hot electric guitar and bass and complex percussion, works as an aesthetic an not as a gimmick. Judy's vocals and keyboards on the few stripped down tracks are compelling, especially on a particularly affecting "Round Midnight". Another spare arrangement, "Its Always 3 a.m." has the heartbreak of vintage Sinatra in that she cuts right to the painful longing of this tune. Her joyful and ebullient take on "Rainbow in Your Eyes" is deliciously topped off with her signature scatting in harmony with her keyboard at top speed."
