Vanguard has an excellent catalog of Handel oratorios, ably conducted and often very well sung by the cream of English oratorio singers--in this case with Heather Harper and John Shirley-Quirk among them. As far as the performance as a whole goes, however, it must inevitably yield before more modern versions, whether on period instruments or not, which play the work complete and have a more lively and informed approach to Baroque performance practice. Fans of the singers need not hesitate, though. --David Hurwitz

100% recomendado."
A Great Performance, But The Recording Could Be Better

"This is a magnificent interpretation and performance, as well as a generous integration of material from various peforming versions Handel used. The soloists are wonderful. A particular pleasure of 'Judas' is the number of gorgeous duets for the soprano and alto (one with chorus). My only complaints are that the sound is a little tight, if warm, and there are miscellaneous thumps audible on the good headphones. Still, this is an excellent choice of what is possibly the only Hanukkah oratorio."

"I am not a technical-musiker, so have no expert opinions, but this is a tight, brilliant performance of the oratorio."
