CD Reviews

Best Orquesta Tipica im Many Many Moons
dldldl | San Francisco, CA United States | 04/13/2001
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Juan Jose Mosalini, one of the most experimental representatives of "tango nuevo", have decided to make a traditional "orquesta tipica" recording. I do not know what made him to make this move, was it a call from inside the soul or a desire to reply to his conservative criticisms, but the result was astonishing. I will take courage to say that the string section of Juan Jose's orchestra is the best I have ever heard in tango music (sometimes I wonder what kind tyrant the orchestra leader should be to produce such synchronicity), add to this the superb musicianship of maestro Mosalini on the first bandoneon, Osvaldo Calo on the piano and Roberto Tormo on the base (a long time associate of Gustavo Beytelmann, who in my - and Roberto's opinion - is the only living tango musician of the caliber of Piazzolla or Pugliese), and you will get hopefully a persuasive picture. If you are a dancer, than I can assure you that 80% of the material on this CD is perfectly danceable (unlike majority of Mosalini's projects), if you are simply a music fan you a) - have a chance to turn into a tango dancer, or b) - will not stay indifferent anyway. Superb music performed with fantastic sense of taste. 5 1/2 stars."
Superb Musicianship

"But the arrangements aren't as danceable as the previous reviewer would have you believe. That said, the sound is glorious. This orchestra is by far the best in tango today, the string section will blow you away, and the recording quality is superb.

Do get this album, and pray that Mosalini gets it together to produce a few albums of true dance music ... this world needs it."
