Esquivel Strip to the Bone
Matt Duss | Seattle, WA USA | 04/04/2001
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Esquivel performs his versions of classic songs from around the world. Though this is not the space age orchestral pop that Juan Garcia Esquivel is known for, it is the man's music in it's purest form. Scaled down, Esquivel's radical sense of musical arrangement is rendered all the more amazing. Juan Garcia performs on piano throughout the album, and gets appropriately wacky at times. He is joined by a very skilled and sympathetic combo including, variously, guitar, bass, maraccas, congas, drum-kit, and other choice noise-makers. "Persian Market" and "Torna A Sirrento" are two highlights. This sounds like it would have been a fun recording session to be involved in. "Four Corners of the World" is a must have for any serious Esquivel fan. And it's in Living Stereo!"
