CD Reviews

Jovino is Masterful
Papetti | Mexico City | 08/01/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Jovino is a true Master of the Piano and Flute, a Master in composition, a Master in arrangements, a true Master at performing and the adjectives could go on and on, but all it'd take is for you to purchase this masterpiece and experience it for yourself.

This is without a doubt one of the best Brazilian Jazz CDs of this 2006; 9 of the 11 cuts here are from his own inspiration, and they are HOT, the ones I've enjoyed the most are:

a) Estrela do Mar (Starfish)

b) Festa de Ere (Children's Party)

c) Homeopatia (Homeopathy)

d) Rancho Azul (Blue Ranch) with Specal Guest Marcos Amorim in guitars

e) Cerca do Macaco (Monkey's Fence)

and the other 2 cuts to finish up the album are also very important;

f) Nana -a Brazilian Jazz Standard written by Moacir Santos/Mario Telles- here performed by Joyce

and

g) Juvenal No Grumari -written by Jovino's musical mentor Hermeto Pascoal- who also performs here superbly.

And finally I'd like to add the list of wonderful musician who accompany Jovino for this masterful creation:

- Jovino Santos Neto / Piano, Flute

- Rogerio Botter Maio / Bass

- Marcio Bahia / Drums

- Hermeto Pascoal / Voice on glass w/water, Melodica, Euphonium mouthpiece and chewing-gum aluminum wrapper on Juvenal in Grumari

- Joyce / Vocals on Nana

- Hamilton de Holanda / 10-string Mandolin on Gente Boa

- Gabriel Grossi / Harmonica on Bach-te-vi

- Marcos Amorim / Acoustic Guitar on Blue Ranch

- Fabio Pascoal / Percussions

Enjoy this outstanding musical journey with Jovino !!!!!!!!"
Exciting Listening
Giordano Bruno | Wherever I am, I am. | 10/24/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I've just discovered (for myself) Jovino! Heard him live, rushed to my computer to buy a disk, bought three, of which this is the most exciting. I doubt Jovino would accept the comparison, but his music reminds me of the best of Dave Brubeck! A complex, intellectually compelling piano combined with a lyrical, vocal sax or clarinet; a penchant for insistent and urgent rhythms and counterrhythms; a subtle, understated yet memorable bass. The Live at Olympia is also an exceptional album. This is not some kind of World Music novelty; this is mainline jazz."
