The Swedish composer Joseph Martin Kraus (1756-1792), an almost exact contemporary of Mozart, has been overshadowed by the latter for 200 years, but recently his large catalogue of compositions has been explored, and has turned up numerous masterpieces in multiple genres. This disc of chamber works featuring the fortepiano is played on period instruments. Violinist Antoinette Lohmann, who has written a biography of Kraus, has made a specialty of playing his music.
