CD Reviews

Dorati's benchmark recordings of Haydn's operas, vol. 2
L. Johan Modée | Earth | 05/01/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This bargain box is the second of two sets that collects Antal Dorati's recordings of Haydn operas. The second set contains the recordings from the late seventies and early eighties (1979-81).

These recordings, as is the case with Dorati's other Haydn recordings - the symphonies in particular - are benchmark classics.

For many people, however, Haydn operas are terra incognita. But, in my view, Dorati's admirable interpretations should be included in every serious collection of classical music.

The recording quality is very fine, the orchestra is excellent, and the performances as well as the performers are first rate. Cast includes, among others, Arleen Auger, Frederica von Stade, Barbara Hendricks, Edith Mathis, Claes H. Ahnsjö, and Anthony Rolfe Johnson. The orchestra is Orchestre de Chambere de Lausanne.

The operas in this second volume are the following:

L'incontro improviso (1775)

L'infedeltà delusa (1773)

L'isola disabitata (1779)

Il mondo della luna (1777).

In addition, you also get three Arie e Terzetto and the Eight Arias Haydn composed for other occasions.

Unfortunately, the booklet has only brief notes on each opera and plot synopsis, no libretti.

Warmly recommended!"
