CD Reviews

Old Friend ... Old Folks
Michael Martin | Macon, NC | 08/02/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"In our ever-changing world there are certain people and certain things which will always bring a smile to our faces. Just mention circus clowns and children's laughter, grandparents and carousels, lemonade and Summer days; and for many of us just hearing the name Jonathan Winters will make us smile and laugh just a bit. To a whole generation he's still the funniest man alive.

That generation remembers him as Mork & Mindy's innocent and loveable son Mearth. To still others he's the father of dozens of hilarious comedy routines and characters thankfully preserved on his classic Verve LP's. Maude Frickert, Chester Honeyhugger and all the rest are indelibly etched into our collective memories.

This recording is a first for Jonathan and its destined to become a classic in a very different way. For it's truly a departure from the norm, he's not performing comedy, but rather a wonderfully bittersweet dialogue on getting old and recalling the joys and the sadness of a passing lifetime.

Prolific musician and wordsmith Verne Langdon has created the perfect combination of music and lyric which endearingly describes the inevitable passage of the years. It's marvelously interpreted by Mr. Winters as only he can. This recording is poignant and heart felt and wonderfully entertaining. I urge everyone, regardless of age, to enjoy this once in a lifetime memory. I give it 5 stars ... only because I'm not allowed to give it a 10! But trust me, it's worth it. Mike Martin"

"When I began listening to this recording, I didn't know what to expect - exactly. Jonathan Winters the famous comedian, so well known for his character voices and far-out way of seeing things. There was none of that here. Jonathan delivered a beautifully told dramatic monologue that eloquently expresses the feelings and musings of Old Folks. In these few minutes he seems to age right before your ears.

Verne Langdon's powerful, poigniant words come straight from the heart, and are wonderfully framed by Jonathan Winters.

"I've always loved Jonathan Winters. I think he's one of America's Finest. But I've never seen him do anything dramatic. "Old Folks" is a tribute to old folks everywhere, and it will bring a tear to your eye. It is truly a beautiful, most inspirational creation. Everyone has to hear this. I highly recommend it!"
