CD Reviews

Gotta Pay Your Dues.

"Gotta pay your dues before you play the blues. This CD covers Johnny from the age of about 14 on up. It's got lots of fifties and sixties jump because those were the times. These two discs show Johnny's progression from high school dance band player, to one of the greatest electric guitarists of all time, (for many of us he's The Best.) If your a guitarist, this CD is a must have, Johnny walks you through the alphabet of rock and roll guitar licks."

"... yes, that is Johnny Winter singing on all the tracks (except the instrumentals). On most, it is a very young Johnny Winter, but it is Johnny Winter.

While I agree that most of the songs don't sound like Johnny Winter blues guitar master, that is kind of the whole point of this release. It's also what makes this CD so much fun. This a glimpse of a young budding musician trying different things hoping to find his niche and break out. Early on, that meant imitating whatever was getting airplay at the time. There are a number of doo wop-ie sounding songs, a few surf sounding instrumentals and even a few stabs at psychedelia.

More importantly, there are little glimpses of the Johnny Winter style that was to come. Hey Hey Hey is my personal favorite from this collection and reminds a lot of Boom Boom by John Lee Hooker. Roadrunner is also a real gem. Birds Don't Row Boats is one of the psychedelic songs I mentioned and also a lot of fun. I have all these, plus Creepy, Ice Cube, Tramp and a few others on my Ipod in my favorites list. And, yes, there are some blues songs in the collection that would fit right in on most of the albums he would release later in his career.

If you are a newcomer to blues guitar looking to sample some of the great blues guitarists, this probably isn't the CD for you. Check out Guitar Slinger, Nothing but the Blues and/or his first two albums with Columbia(Johnny Winter and Second Winter).

This release is more fore the blues fan already familiar with Johnny Winter's more notable releases and is looking to follow the path that led him to where he is today."
