Varro, Kellso, Parrott and Ascione swing mightily

"Pianist Varro put together one hell of a jazz quartet with trumpeter Jon-Erik Kellso blowing up a storm as the featured horn. Fellow New Yorkers bassist Nicki Parrott and drummer Joe Ascione make a dynamic rhythm team, they are also as good as it gets. All involved contribute memorable solos, hot and at the same time sensitive; and this quartet also demonstrates that ensemble playing is alive and well. Great choice of tunes, too--some familiar, others you will want to become familiar with. This is in the swing/traditional/mainstream realm, but fresh, in the moment, and imaginative. I highly recomend this album, yet another winner from the folks at Arbors Records. Kellso is long overdue for a "Chapter 3" CD, Arbors, bring it on!! (He has 2 excellent CDs as a leader on their label--Chapter 1 & 2.)"
