If Rhino's more comprehensive Anthology 1964-1977 is too rich for your blood, this 10-song collection offers a good introduction to the charismatic singer-guitarist's biggest hits. Along with the immortal P.F. Sloan-penned spy drama "Secret Agent Man," the disc contains such memorable Rivers numbers as the bittersweet "Poor Side of Town," the rollicking Chuck Berry covers "Memphis" and "Maybelline," his soulful readings of the Motown hits "Baby, I Need Your Lovin'" and "The Tracks of My Tears," and his very credible interpretations of the blues standards "Seventh Son" and "The Midnight Special." --Scott Schinder

CD Reviews

Great rerecordings.Well done and faithful to the originals.

(4 out of 5 stars)

"There is an excellent album that Roy Orbison did in the 1987 called "In Dreams". Orbison went into the studio and re-recoreded 19 of his best songs. It is a fantastic CD. Orbison still sings great and he and his musicians stayed true to every note of the originals. What you get are new recordings that are fresh and bright and more defined without the heavy compression that was required on vinyl albums of the 60's. An original artist who can still make magic done with the latest greatest technology available in 1987.

I bring this up because this Johnny Rivers Cd falls into the same catagory. These are rerecordings done by Johnny and some excellent musicians who stay fairly true, note for note to the original arrangements. The sound quality is so much better than the original recordings that I don't mind the fact that these are redone this way. Like the Orbison recordings Johnny still has a great voice and can really belt out a song. If you already have a CD of the original recordings (and you should) give this a try. I love it. Modern recording technology with a multi talented performer who stays true to his original sound and arrangements. There are actually some improvements too. On the original recordings the harmonica on most songs is being played using harmonicas that are in the wrong key for the songs. This has been fixed here and the harmonica parts are played in the correct keys."
