CD Reviews

He can be dangerous!
R. Showalter | Salina, Kansas | 01/17/2002
(4 out of 5 stars)

"I saw Mr. Jones at Rosa's, in Chicago, last November. He's anything but "little". Live blues is always better, in my opinion, but this is a fine CD. "I Can Be Dangerous" displays some of his sweet guitar work, which I don't feel the CD overall does justice. The title track, "Blues Is In The House" is also a classic. The other tracks are fun. Take "Girlfriend Blues", for instance. "My girlfriend's got a girlfriend, too!" Buy the CD, then catch him "live"."
Gotta have it!

"If you want anybody to get hooked on Blues, buy him/her this CD! It's pure magic.. Heard a track on a local radio station, KNON in Fort Worth (TX)on a Friday evening (DJ Don-O) and I knew I had to have it.A MUST for each Blues freak."
Light Blues gem from little-known master

"I came across Johnny Jones through Pandora online radio, and after several songs were played from this CD, I knew I had to have it. I haven't heard of him before, even with my extensive blues collection, but Johnny Jones offers a totally fresh approach to the blues that is addicting.

The CD alternates upbeat, funny songs with the more bluesy love songs, which are just beautiful. Johnny is very precise on his guitar work, and he launches very stylistically polished attacks, which are both understated and purposeful. His guitar tone is also quite different from anything else I've heard on the blues scene, with a certain sense of signature sound. What I also appreciate about his guitar solos is that they are not overbearing. He doesn't go into squeezing out high notes on the CD - he makes his music accessible and easy on your ears. Even audiences that are not blues fans would appreciate his approach.

To add to Johnny's guitar mastery, his singing is top-notch, and this is hands down the easiest blues CD for singing along - yes, this music really does make me want to sing along once I've learned the lyrics. His vocals are very much accessible and also easy on the ears. He has a great singing voice, smooth and youthful, precisely grasping the notes.

I mentioned that some songs are funny. Funny blues? Yes! Johnny's lyrics here are very modern and very seldom cliche. Several songs have sexual overtones, where Johnny takes the time to praise his lady being well-stacked in the back... ;-) Nonetheless, he does it in a classy and very humorous way. There's Girlfriend Blues, which goes like "I just found out... my girlfriend's got a girlfriend too." There's farm-boy blues... You get the picture.

Aside from the silly songs, however, Johnny has some excellent love songs, which really grab at your soul, and both his singing and his guitar style come together to make them stand from something else you may have heard. If you have someone special who fills your heart with joy, you will especially appreciate these songs. Those who have been hurt deeply in the past will get a strong tug at your heart strings.

The title track is an excellent vocal duo, with great spirit and passion.

The fact that this CD is out of print is a true disappointment. I would recommend you getting whatever used copy you can find, even if it means paying more cash for it. This is a real gem."
