"While Johnny Hammond Smith cut a mark for himself as a B-3 funkateer for a while, and even early on, as a Chitlin' circuit burner, his true genius was as a straight ahead Jazzer and Balladeer. To me, if you're a Jazz fan, and don't even like the organ, Johnny Hammond Smith may be the one organist you'll dig. And if you're a Jazz organ fan, his playing will enchant you as he absorbs you with his rich chords, heavy swinging basslines and grooves, and bluesy and meldodic playing. - - Johnny Hammond Smith is a well rounded player with one foot in the old Wild Bill Davis school, some flavors reminiscent of Shirley Scott and Freddie Roach but very much his own thing. Buy this CD and get lost in heavy grooves and some pretty wild chordal solos good enough to make JOS blush."
