CD Reviews

If you think French singers can't rock, think again...

(5 out of 5 stars)

"This is an awsome kick-ass rock'n roll record in French! Johnny Hallyday finally gets it right with an album written especially for him by JeanJacques Goldman & Eric Benzi. The production is superb. No corny French "variete" songs or arrangements. Just pure unadulterated rock'n roll and some gorgeous ballads. His voice soars. Not surprisingly, the album was recorded in the living room of his estate in Saint Tropez. It has a sense of immediacy that has been lacking in his recordings since his two best albums entitled "Je suis ne dans la rue" (1969) and "Flagrant delit (1971). Listen to the rock'n roll rumble of "lady Lucille", the accoustic blues gem "le regard des autres" and the gorgeous ballad "un reve a faire". This is a must have for any serious rock'n roll fan who can be open enough to listen to rock'n roll in French. It's incredible that this guy who has recorded with Carl Perkins, The Stray Cats, Emmylou Harris, and Bryan Adams, and has had Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix, Mick Jones (the Foreigner one)and Richie Sambora,to name a few, play on his records is still unknown in the States. He has the charisma of Presley and a voice a la John Fogerty. Bon roc et roule!"
A must CD for anyone who wants to listen to Johnny Hallyday

"Johnny Hallyday, the Elvis of France, is getting even better as he gets older. This CD has some beatiful ballads similar to the good songs of Eagles, and also Rock'n Roll that Johnny does the best. His voice is powerful in expressing the emotions of the pieces he sings. His usual charisma catches the heart of the listener into the music. This CD is not a so called "French" music, though it certainly has its beauty in it. After all, the songs are written by Goldman, another giant of France as a composer. It is not another loud Rock'n Roll CD. There is a balance and harmony of the French music and music of the English speaking world. Each time I listen to it, I feel like it is a matter of time for Johnny to be discovered in USA. It is hard not to enjoy this CD. There is something in it for sure for most type of modern music lovers."
Johnny Hallyday Is the Greatest Singer That Ever Lived

"If you follow the music of Johnny Hallyday from beginning to end, you will find the evolution of the greatest singer that ever lived.
And don't give me that 'But it's in French' nonsense. Since when did the exact meaning of the words ever surpass the quality of the music? So many Americans need to throw off a huge burden of arrogance and isolationism before they are ever going to get to enjoy and profit from the musical wonders this world has to offer."
