Synopsis

Product Description
* Johnny Griffin's last record date. * In February 1963, Griffin made his first UK appearance at Ronnie Scott's in London, where he played a four-week engagement. In May 2008, the "Little Giant" was back to play a couple of evening sessions in a belated celebration of his 80th birthday. Sadly, that engagement proved to be Griffin's last UK appearance, as he passed away just two months later. "Once dubbed the fastest saxophonist in the world, age has softened his technique, yet his natural charisma remains. Bringing a simply jaw-dropping lineup to town this time, he's joined by phenomenal, fiery US trumpeter Roy Hargrove and iconic powerhouse drummer Billy Cobham. Pianists James Pearson and Dave Newton and bassist Reggie Johnson complete this unmissable band." -- Time Out London

CD Reviews

Jazz as it was meant to be heard - Live with audience love!
Grady Harp | Los Angeles, CA United States | 08/11/2010
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Johnny Griffin LIVE AT RONNIE SCOTT'S is about as close as the listener can get to the real core of fine Jazz in this beautifully modulated selection of works. Recorded live in 2008 in London and later mixed and edited in Mannheim, this CD bursts open with 'Lester Leaps In' giving each of the members of the ensemble special riff time - Roy Hargrove (trumpet and flugelhorn), Johnny Griffin (tenor sax), James Pearson (piano), Billy Cobham (drums). It sparkles and the audience goes wild with every solo turn. The spirit settles down to soul in tracks like 'When We Were One' with a gorgeous lead-in trumpet solo by Roy Hargrove, and a fine vocal by guest Paul Kuhn on 'How Deep Is The Ocean" The entire session is a pleasure, made more so by the ambience of being live. You can feel the love from the audience and the liveliness of the musician's response to that love. This is a terrific album! Grady Harp, August 10"
