CD Reviews

SONY Reissue of three albums but what's wrong with that?
C. Scanlon | among us humans | 03/11/2009
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Ok. So you can get these elsewhere, and in other formats, but get this here and you'll have something to keep, and to play.

The first disk is his great Hymns By Johnny Cash, and what could be better than this? We can listen once more here to:

It was Jesus (twice)

I saw a Man

Are all the Children In?

The Old Account

Lead me gently Home

Swing Low, Sweet Chariot

Snow in His Hair

Lead me, Father

I Call Him

These Things Shall Pass

He'll Be A Friend

God Will

done in that great, direct, strong, early Johnny Cash style. This is not over sweet Elvis Hymns; this is that early Man in Black singing from his great heart, the real deal. I hear America sing, from the dirt fields and farms. Tihs is good old Johnny Cash music and you got to hear it again.

The second disk is the great Now, There Was a Song! collection of country ballads and blues, as only Mr. Cash could do. We hear:

Seasons of my Heart

I Feel Better All Over

I Couldn't Keep from Crying

Time Changes Everything

My Shoes Keep Walking Back to You

I'd Just Be Fool Enough (To Fall)

Transfusion Blues

Why Do You Punish Me (For Loving You)?

I Will Miss You When You Go

I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry

Just One More

Honky Tonk Girl

Great songs like only Mr. Cash delivers them. Hear this, America!

The Third disk is Ring of Fire: The Best of Johnny Cash, with:

Ring of Fire

I'd Still Be There

What Do I Care

I Still Miss Someone

Forty Shades of Green

Were You There (When They Crucified My Lord)?

The Rebel Johnny Yuma

Bonanza!

The Big Battle

Remember the Alamo

Tennessee Flat Top Box

(There'll be) Peace in the Valley

Okay, so a lot of what you know to be the BEST of Johnny Cash is not included in this list, but you do get a whole lot of great recordings. Personally I believe the best of Johnny Cash to be in his Bitter Tears (Ballads of the American Indian), absolutely no doubt, and that is the one you must hear. I also appreciate his 16 Biggest Hits as the finest greatest hits collection I have seen. Maybe you have seen better. But please let us all thank Sony for putting these three great disks into one collection and releasing it now. Keep Mr. Cash Alive!

Worth having. This is American music. Hear it once more. Oh, yeah, also try: A Patriot's Handbook: Songs, Poems, Stories, and Speeches Celebrating the Land We Love. Oops! I meant to put A Patriot's Songbook to hear Mr. Cash sing, but the other one's good reading, too."
