Synopsis

Amazon.com essential recording
One of John Tesh's early big-sellers, Monterey Nights is a 1993 compilation that draws from five of the pianist's earliest recordings. It's a nice package, with ample variety in tempo, mood, and instrumentation to showcase Tesh's skill at crafting memorable pop-instrumental melodies. Two selections from his superb Garden City album, "The Waltz" (formerly "Waltz for Julie") and the title track, rank among his most attractive works, and an affecting piece such as "The Endless Road" (with a lovely cross-pollination of synthed-up female voices and muscular piano) demonstrates Tesh's ability to push the right emotional buttons with a minimum of melodrama. Some choices, such as the wearying title selection and its cheesy electronics, sound a bit dated, and the album's three original pieces are decent but unexceptional. Overall, this is an enjoyable overview of Tesh's early works. --Terry Wood

CD Reviews

This CD is a spirt lifting experience.

"This is one of the CD's on my shelf that is always played on a regular basis. Sit on the couch, turn down the lights and be carried away. A true stress reliever and spirit lifter. Good Night Moon will bring you to higher places! A beautiful mix of music that will always be a favorite, and make you feel good!"
By far his best work.

"Get a glass of wine, put this tape in, turn the lights down low, sit back and enjoy! The album is beautifully constructed from start to finish. He cradles you in his music as you float gently from one song to the next. I bought this in 1993 and still listen to it regularly."
If you only listen to one song...

"April Song makes this album worth it. The use of the instruments and the moving highs and lows makes this song a 10! Bastille Day also adds a touch of sweet emotion with the use of the strings. Way to go John Tesh!"
