CD Reviews

Very good portrait indeed
Jacek Lazarczyk | Chicago, IL USA | 09/07/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

""Portrait of a Romantic" could be the subtitle of this album. It's touching with a range of emotions. John Surman is a master arranger. Despite the fact the he plays all of the instruments, he leaves himself enough space for dramatic solos (mostly on soprano saxophone). Some shorter pieces are little more abstract, others have a gentle groovy undercurrent. The music makes you shiver when listened to late at night."
Sounds like surman to me

"He does play bass clarinet, recorders, soprano and baritone saxophones, and uses a synthesizer on this disc. Perhaps the previous reviewer isn't familiar with the range of acoustic and electronic sounds that Surman has mastered. (I do, however, agree with the 'star rating' the previous reviewer awards the album.)"
