CD Reviews

Liszt Sonata Flawed
Priorityviolins | Westerville, OH USA | 10/27/2007
(4 out of 5 stars)

"I bought this four CD set primarily for the Liszt sonata in B minor recorded in 1964. This re-issue on CD has superb sound and is much better than the old LP version I have in my collection. However, there is a flaw in this re-mastering that bothers me. Periodically throughout the Liszt sonata, there are small sound glitches that are not in my LP version. It sounds like the master tape stuck at various places and produced a slight speed change that is certainly audible and annoying. I am surprised John Hadden, the digital re-mastering engineer, did not catch this problem. Perhaps he did and figured most listeners would not hear it. But I did and it detracts from the beauty of this performance. Aside from this problem, the four CD set is well done and shows the superb artistry of John Ogdon."
