Let Them Pass (laissez-passer) features Montreal-based drummer with two longtime associates, Joe Giardullo (flute, tenor saxophone, and bass clarinet), and Mike Bisio (bass), in his first recording as leader. When discussing John?s music, the term "leader" must not be taken literally. This is true collective composition created in the moment?with John acting more as the facilitator of the group aesthetic. In his inimically subtle manner, John leads the trio in a music full with a thick frothy blend of reflections, tradition, and emotion. The listening is almost deafening as the trio treads effortlessly from the Middle Easter-Eastern European modal traditions to a simple very American blues form. Very quietly, but powerfully in its knowledge, the trio uses these blends of musical traditions to find a new tradition uniquely their own. But more importantly, along the way they give the listener the musical equivalent of a "Laissez-passer" pass?granting unrestricted access and movement for a journey of discovery?from within and without.
