CD Reviews

Clarity: crisp, sculpted, exquisite
George L. Locke | USA | 10/30/2006
(4 out of 5 stars)

"This album is one long track, about 45 minutes, divided into several sections spliced onto one another rather abruptly. Each section could be described as an exploration of a different electronic 'instrument'. There is no subtle interplay of thick layers: each part is an intense, direct close-up. This creates clarity, an absence of distraction.

The overall structure of the work also provides clarity. The various sections are divided very cleanly, no cross-fading whatever. The stark juxtaposition will startle the listener, allowing critical distance. The closing drone continues for longer than the preceding sections, providing a strong sense of culmination and completion.

Duncan combines his usual shortwave static with more 'computerish' sounds in this piece. His use of dynamics and panning are excellent. Some of the sounds are quite harsh, while others are less so; nothing in it projects comfort or warmth. Cold, hard, and brilliant like a crystal. The work has a strong feeling of deliberate, thoughtful choice.

Highly recommended for close listening. A challenging piece of music which benefits from repeated listening."
