Synopsis

Throughout his long tenure with New Grass Revival, John Cowan sometimes sounded like a frustrated country-bluegrass singer yearning to let loose a rock & roll wail. On this self-titled album, his second solo record, Cowan more often resembles a frustrated pop-rock singer yearning to get back to the country heartland. The album was produced by Cowan's friend and fellow pop-country vagabond Wendy Waldman. The 13 tracks encapsulate Cowan's stylistic reach, from the bluegrassy "My Heart Will Follow You" and the extended instrumental jam "Sligo" to the computerized funk of "Roll Away the Stone" and the arena-rock posturing of "High Above the Powerlines." Several of the better tunes are among the more laid-back: the jazzy "Nothing but the Blues," the slinky "Mississippi Delta Time," and a lovely Celtic-flavored cover of Merle Travis's "Dark as a Dungeon" that shows off Cowan's sirenlike tenor without overwhelming the song. --Rick Mitchell

CD Reviews

An Extraordinary Talent!!

"I first heard John Cowan back in the 1980's when he was part of The New Grass Revival and they toured with Leon Russell. I went to hear Leon, but it was John Cowan's voice that really gave me goose-bumps...and it STILL does! This CD is a wonderful mix of bluesy ballads, love songs that you'll want to play for someone special and up-tempo tunes. It crosses over boundaries into blues, bluegrass, soft rock and pop. It's been a long time since I've found a CD as rewarding. I can play it repeatedly, even on long trips in my car, and never get tired of it. John Cowan's talent is a special gift from God! Buy this CD if you want to hear a great singer, songwriter and musician."

"I'm proud to tell you John, our 13 yr old daughter LOVES this CD. Her tastes might just be growing beyond the boy bands, thank goodness. As for the music, it's all terrific."
