CD Reviews

A SUPER PRO!
Bruce Armstrong | Long Beach, CA United States | 10/31/2008
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I rarely buy piano trio recordings anymore. I have my requisite Bill Evans, Oscar Peterson and vintage Nat Cole trio recordings whenever I feel the need to listen to that genre, but in the case of this John Bunch CD I recently made an exception. And I have no regrets! Every selection is a "classic" of course---all by Jimmy Van Heusen. Many are long-time favorites ("Darn That Dream," "Nancy With The Laughing Face," "All This And Heaven Too")and all receive the conscientious treatment--harmonically and melodically--that only a "super pro" like John Bunch can bring to them. John has been in every jazz and commercial music venue--from roaring big bands (Maynard Ferguson) to the top stars (Tony Bennett's pianist/conductor for many years). He has recorded as a sideman with countless jazz luminaries and always produced at an "all-star" level. He is well in his 80s now and yet his touch, technique and inventiveness remain timeless. This CD is just like listening to a couple of sets by his trio at any of the many NYC clubs fortunate enough to have him. A real bonus are the informative liner notes with nice commentary from John. For those who may not be aware, John was a POW in WWII, his bomber having been shot down over Germany. In typical fashion, John has always been modest about that period of his life in every interview I have ever read over the years, but I personally think it tells us something about the man that he was able to put that experience behind him and eventually dedicate his life to producing musical beauty. Thank you Mr. Bunch, and may you play on forever!"

"John Bunch and his trio are superb in this great set of Jimmy Van Heusen songs--each one a classic. Bunch, at 86, remains in full command and this set is not to be missed by mainstream piano lovers. Superb fidelity too. A winner."
