CD Reviews

Barry, but not Bond
Anders Ahlerup | Solna, Sweden | 04/21/2000
(3 out of 5 stars)

"The name is Bond ... James Bond ! We have heard it several times. And since british composer John Barry for almost three decades became world famous for scoring 11 Bond-movies, he has become a part of the Bond-spy saga. So the title of this CD is ofcourse referring to his connection with 007. But watch out ! This CD with the Bondish title has very little to do with James Bond or Barrys music to the spy-saga. Two number, "007" and "From Russia With Love" (both from the 1963 Bond movie "From Russia With Love") are Bond-related, but then this album contains parts of the soundtrack from two movies, the television documentary "Elizabeth Taylor in London" from 1963 (7 numbers) and "Four in The Morning" a movie from 1965 (6 numbers). There are also some numbers representing Barrys musical achievements during the 60s, "Zulu" from the 1963 movie, "Fancy Dance" from the television show "The Newcomers" (1963-1969) and three numbers, "Kinky" from 1963, "The Loneliness of Autumn" from 1964 and "Troubadour" from 1964 which are not related to any film or television production. For all interested in early John Barry, this album is a good investment and represent a wide varity of music by a young and succesful John Barry on his way to world fame. The total time of music (20 tracks) is 50 minutes and 46 seconds and it is enjoyable listening all the way."
