CD Reviews

Superb
03/05/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This playing is stunning, as is the instrument, as is the
recording. His touch is unspeakably deft and fine. His
recording of the Bach lute suites is also available, but
you have to import it from Germany (amazon.de). For heaven's
sakes, do so!"
Beautiful!

"Flawless, beautiful, relaxful performances. The 10-string is the only way to play Bach on the guitar. The range is much larger than a 6-string and it resembles an organ or lute at times. Goran is a master and he doesn't struggle with these compositions or his guitar which is absolutely unbelievable being that this is some of the most difficult music to play on the guitar."
A perfect complement
Paul Magnussen | Campbell, CA USA | 01/17/2008
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This album forms the perfect complement to Mr Söllscher's marvellous album of the Lute Suites -- or, if you're lucky enough to have them, the two volumes of Bach's complete works for lute from which the Lute Suites were extracted: now apparently deleted, although Amazon lists them both second-hand (Vol. 1 & Vol. 2).

Transcriptions of odds and ends by Bach have been featured by virtually every classical guitarist since Segovia; transcriptions of complete suites are a comparatively recent phenomenon. Among the early ones were versions of the 1st and 3rd Cello Suites (BWV 1007 & 1009) by John W. Duarte. The artist's own transcription of the 1st Suite appears on this disc, but, despite the assertion of Amazon's "On this CD" listing, the 3rd Cello Suite does not: it is the 3rd Violin Sonata, BWV 1005.

Even now it's rare to find guitar recordings of the entire 1st Cello Suite, although the Prelude from it has been been a staple of the repertory for decades (including, in Segovia's case, a somewhat startling bass line added by Manuel Ponce). The 2nd is, if anything, even rarer.

The Sonatas have been recorded by several excellent guitarists, including Manuel Barrueco and Paul Galbraith. But nothing is quite like that wonderful 11-string Bolin guitar in the hands of the master.
