Eberlin was a very interesting character, actually one of Mozart's successors in Salzburg. His particular brand of musical conservatism must have been rather more suitable to the singularly unmusical Archbishop Coloredo than was Mozart's personal and musical insolence. But that's not being fair to Eberlin, who was by all accounts an organist of considerable ability and who crafted these nine toccatas and fugues more of less in imitation of the The Big Guy--Johann Sebastian Bach. Truth to tell, none of them are particularly long or complicated, and the music is interesting enough to sustain interest. They make an excellent addition to the organ repertoire on disc. --David Hurwitz
