CD Reviews

Greatest Ever
Lee | New York | 06/24/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Joe Pass is simply the greatest guitarist ever. His bottomless improvisational techniques boggle the mind and offer the ears something new with each repeated listening to any of his songs. His ability to modulate seamlessly at will and fill his melodies with harmonized chords and walking bass lines take your breath away. Pass's lightning fast single-note and chordal abilities are used only when needed, keeping the artistry of each some song in balance with its complexity. This double-CD album consists of fast and slow songs of all intensities. Most are acoustic with Pass playing alone without missing a beat. From a guitarist's point of view, while the general spoon-fed public continues to idolize the rather limited skills of Hendrix, Vaughan and all other 'novice guitarists' compared to this ultimate virtuoso, Joe Pass sits quietly in the jazz world with skills so beyond comprehension, it would take more than a couple of lifetimes to scrape at his level. But the true genius of Joe Pass aside from his technical mastery is that he made beautiful music through the gorgeous ornamentation of his lush jazz melodies."

"If any guitar player wants to hear how solo guitar is to be played, listen to this album. When I first heard this album, I was still fairly new to straight-ahead jazz. There weren't too many jazz records I liked. When I heard this, I completely fell in love with it. Just the listening experience alone was just awesome. So whether you are a jazz enthusiast or not, you got hear this one!"

"Very few albums have I purchased that I continue to listen to regularly after a few years. This is one of them that I do continue to listen to - for 16+ years. Everybody I've played this album for loves it - it's made my Christmas shopping pretty easy. You can't go wrong with Joe and a couple beers!"
