Rainbow...err, I mean JLT Live in Germany
cd-heaven | rock n roll heaven | 10/22/2008
(3 out of 5 stars)

"Joe Lynn Turner has been rocking for over 30 years. For the last 10 years or so now he's been more exclusively a solo artist, with the exception of his brillant 1985 solo album Rescue You. But Joe insists on being fondly remembered for his short tenure with the band Rainbow from 1981 - 1984. All heck why not, it was were his popularity soared and ultimately ended, at atleast commercially. Since those Rainbow days, Joe's been a part of Yngwie Malmsteens Rising Force, Deep Purple, Mother's Army, Hughes Turner Project, Brazen Abbot, Sunstorm, Cem Koksal, and countless session work, and over a dozen solo albums since his Rainbow days, and now the time has come to put out his first offical solo release. You'd think, just like as with any other artist, that it would be a career spanning hits / song collection, right? Well think again, Joe relies heavily on the Rainbow catalog, so much so that 9 of the 13 tracks performed were all Rainbow songs. While not necessarily a horrible thing, it's just who wants to hear Cant Let You Go or Street of Dreams again? I mean, the Hughes Turner Project, Brazen Abbot, heck even Cem koksal all put out Live albums recently with JLT on vocals featuring those tracks...who needs them again? Don't get me wrong, I am not slamming this live solo album. JLT has put out some brillant solo work, his last release Second Hand Life is excellent, and it under represented in this collection by only 2 tracks. Why not mix it up a bit, place some solo tracks, with some Rainbow hits, maybe Heaven Tonight from the Malmsteen days (which is not on this BTW), but 9 Rainbow tracks, 2 solo pieces, 1 song from the masterpiece Sunstorm project (Yes you heard me right, a masterpiece of AOR) and a cover of Deep Purple Burn which is fine but again performed by JLT for the zillionth time in any live band he performs in. This release is strictly for the hardcore, diehard JLT fan. The sound is great, the guitars are mixed in nicely, and yes JLT sound awesome."
"A must for Joe Lynn Turner fans"

"If you are a fan of Rainbow then you'll enjoy this cd. Most of the cd is made up of Rainbow material from the Joe Lynn Turner era and it sounds pretty good. There is also some solo material and Deep purple. The recording is good not great but JLT sounds in pretty good voice and will make you wish that Joe did some more extensive touring because this sounds like a concert worth going to!"
