CD Reviews

A lovely collection of fifties music
Peter Durward Harris | Leicester England | 09/04/2002
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Joan was one of several excellent British female singers around in the fifties, most of them now largely forgotten. In one way, it's easy to understand, as most of their repertoire (including their hits) was made up of covers of Amercican songs, but it's a shame because the quality of their music was just as good as the American originals.Joan had two American hits (Till they've all gone home, a cover of a song previously recorded by Gisele McKenzie) and Croce de oro, both included here. Here you will also find Joan's versions of two Doris Day songs (Someone else's roses and If I give my heart to you) which were both top five British hits for Joan, together with two Teresa Brewer songs (Till I waltz again with you - Joan's first single - and Ricochet, another huge British hit for Joan) and a nice cover of This ole house, a huge hit for Rosemary Clooney, revived in the eighties in Britain by Shakin' Stevens. Joan had a lovely voice and could sing all types of song - brilliantly. With more original material, she could have been a big star in America and her music would be more widely available now than it actually is."
