Unknown and Deserving to be Discovered

"Because this world "needs" to label and categorize its' works of art, one will most likely find this c.d. under the heading of jazz. In keeping with other great artists such as Jaco Pastorius, Joe Zawinul, Herbie Hancock etc. Jimmy Wilson's music springs from that magical place within, where much of the world's exquisite influences have been simmering, waiting to be stirred. That which is placed on the table before us is a bouquet of melody and chordal structure beautifully seasoned with just the right amount of jazz, funk, classical, and R&B to suit the most demanding of tastes.
Surprising from the first note, this cd keeps on revealing discovery with each track. Having met Jimmy on several occasions, I found nothing in his demeanor that would hint at the talent below the surface. Unassuming and low key regarding his own works, most of his discussion centered around other musicians. Only in retrospect does this writer see that those qualities abound in his first solo cd effort, 'Identity'. The compositions allow plenty of room for his guest musicians to explore their own identity. This generosity of spirit does not however limit Jimmy's ability to communicate with power, his heart and soul within the confines of each well structured musical statement. Throughout, the songs have a thoroughly modern feel full of inventiveness and fearlessness, placing contrasting ideas next to one another and in some cases, juxtaposing his eclectic influences right on top of each other. While in the wrong hands such liberties might create cacophony, the end result here is nothing if not beautiful musical realities on a backdrop of pure color. A track by track analysis within the limited space provided could not be given the justice deserved so suffice it to say that there are no throwaway tracks on 'Identity'. There is expert playing by some of the best in the business, who give this music respect and due diligence while just having plain fun that definitely comes across in the joyful performances present on 'Identity'. One is left with the idea that life itself is a process of becoming, and 'Identity' is not that place where Mr. Wilson has arrived, but more so an indication of where Mr. Wilson is going! In that context, it is a nice place to be. Pick it up and go there yourself. I trust you will enjoy the journey!"
