Transition time
Richard E. Barnes | 09/30/2009
(4 out of 5 stars)

"On the surface this album struck me as dark and very personal. Just the opposite of what I really come to expect then I went back to James earlier solo album "Out of the Dark" and Renaissance Ilusion, just is different here, a transition what at first seem like dark songs such as the opening track Outsider are really songs of hope. Funny enough "Outsider" would be a great track for James old ex band mate Eric Clapton to cover. In a way Eric was an outsider too. Living from the Inside Out features James old friend Steve Hackett who most of us know from Genesis who pulls out all the stops on a beautiful guitar solo reminesent of Fith of Frith, these two artist work very well together I hope the partnership continues. The biggest surprise are the lovely instrumentals Hidden Nature,Near the end of May and Shangri-La. Calling out to You is another gem.

James McCarty is always changing-evolving. Here we hear an artist in the process of change. Not surprsing really founder of the Yardbirds, Renaissance and Illusion groups that are all about Change."
Sitting on the Top of Time

"I purchased this CD at a Yardbirds show in June of this year, and it continues to be a favorite, getting regular "play time" in my car, home and office. Each track is unique, each with its own feel, depth and meaning. As with "Out of the Dark", each song was written by Jim McCarty, who has a wonderful way of weaving elements into his music that aren't immediately apparent, but continue to reveal themselves as you listen again and again, getting deeper and deeper into the song. From the opening soft-rock feel of "The Outsider", to the final track, "Shangri La", and its gentle notes that give way to surprising strength and power, this CD is a gift. (And in the middle, I began to see Hummingbirds in an entirely new way!) I can't say enough about the musicians that contributed to this work who are all amazing talents!

I was told as I bought the CD that it was different, and it is. It's not a formulaic production of sound. It's thoughtful, beautifully produced, and a true work of art."
Fantastic!

"A must have for fans of Jim's more mellow side. Fans of Renaissance, Stairway, and Illusion will want to get this one. Reminds me of McCarty's 'Out Of The Dark' album...only better."
