Synopsis

Richard Thompson is a big fan of fellow Englishman Jez Lowe, and you don't often get a better recommendation than that. He's got good reason to like him, as Lowe writes some pretty great songs. He and his band then knock them out with British Isles fervor, dressing up arrangements with a plethora of acoustic instruments including cittern, mandolin, dulcimer, harmonica, fiddle, string bass, and pennywhistle. The result is an irresistible, and irrepressibly English, thinking-man's dance party. Lowe scores extra high marks on the lilting yet driving "Glad Rags Again," the gentle "Sod All," and the jaunty "Limping Drinker's Polka." --Michael Ruby

CD Reviews

Brilliant songwriting
Michael Toland | Austin, TX USA | 10/29/1998
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Jez Lowe is an amazing songwriter who writes his own British Isles folk tunes that sound like old traditional songs as handed down by Elvis Costello. A delight for fans of Celtic music and singer/songwriters alike. A great record."
Wonderful lyrics and melodies

"Heard this artist for the first time on NPR a few months ago. Have been very happy with the CD. Melodies are compelling and lyrics are moving/fun. And - my 9 and 6 year old love it too."
