CD Reviews

JESSICA SIMPSON "A PUBLIC AFFAIR"
Pete Doherty | UK | 09/15/2008
(4 out of 5 stars)

"I've been a fan of Jessica Simpson's since "I Wanna Love You Forever" and after listening to that song, if you do become a fan, it's clear why...her voice. I like her as a person, she can be funny on Newlyweds, personally I think it's a bit of an act, I don't think she's as stupid as she makes out, but if she is, good for her for making loads of money.

Back to the music, her latest album is country, some people haven't taken to it and some people will just dismiss it simply because it's Jessica Simpson, I personally love it, but that's a different review. On "A Public Affar" the songs are just like her first two albums, very pop, but for me, it's her voice that always comes out on top, she might not be in the same league as Mariah Carey or Tina Arena, vocally, but she's way ahead of most singers who are having success these days. I think "Walkin' 'Round In A Circle," "The Lover In Me" and "Back To You" are the three best songs on the album, "Walkin' 'Round In A Circle" and "The Lover In Me" are two catchy midtempo songs and "Back To You" is a nice ballad that shows her voice of nicely, any of the three (if not all) should have been released as singles.

I think "A Public Affair," "You Spin Me Round (Like A Record)," "If You Were Mine," "Walkin' 'Round In A Circle," "The Lover In Me," "Swing With Me," "Push Your Tush," (even with it's cheesey lyrics) "Back To You," "I Don't Want To Care" and "I Belong To Me" are all brilliant songs, I'm not that keen on "B.O.Y.," "Between You & I," "Fired Up" and "Let Him Fly" but the rest of the album is great."
The Best Song is Not Even on This Version of the CD!

""I Belong to Me" is the best song on this cd, and its only on the Extra Track Edition that costs more. Go figure.

I love Jessica and try to support her and her music. Yet this cd was a stretch even for this fan. The songs range from mediocre ("A Public Affair") to horrid ("Push the Tush") and I would give the cd 1 star if Simpson's voice wasn't so great. This cd is over-done with the crazy beats often overshadowing Simpson's voice. She tries to cover many different genres on one cd; yet, she never seems to get it quite right. She seems lost, she's trying to do too much and we just end up with a forgetable album."
What I think of A Public Affair.

"I don't have too much to say about A Public Affair. I have the CD for it. I just find it sad she didn't release any more singles after I Belong To Me. There were a lot of great tracks to release for the third single, like Fired Up, Lover In Me, and If You Were Mine.

To be honest, Jessica deserves so much more than what she's given credit to. A lot of people say she's not good and all that. Sure Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera came out on top with there CDs but Jessica Simpson deserved to be up there with them. This artist, Jessica Simpson, deserves better. I'll admit I'm not too fond of her music but she does have a number of songs that I do like."
