CD Reviews

Since the Devil made her do it ...
:) | Bellevue, WA USA | 04/24/2010
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Since she's being crucified (pardon the PUN) now by hateful types, I figgered there must be something interesting there. So I ran out and bought it. Great stuff. My dad was from Kansas, and Jennifer's muse reflects the spirit of the place wonderfully. I wish her happiness and peace - don't pay attention to those who now revile your honesty, girl - and I look forward to the new album. May more folks ditch their shrill sanctimony and be converted to tolerance and REAL love for their fellow humans. And may Amazon feel ashamed for posting hate-filled comments that have nothing to do with the art."
Song by Song review of one of my favorite CDs
smiling.behind.blue.eyes | MI, USA | 12/21/2008
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I am not at all surprised by the reviews given here, as I believe this is by far her best album. The lyrics rock, her voice is a joy to listen to, and the music is gorgeous. All the songs flow from one to the next - it is not a jarring album. I first got this album from a friend in 2002 and the songs still...are some of my all time favorites.

Faithful to Me (both): Just hearing Faithful to Me as the prelude...I knew I would love this CD. It is powerful without being loud, calming without being soft. -9.5/10

Whole Again: This song got me through a lot of tough times...I used it as a way to ask for God to change my life when I was too sad to come up with the words. -9/10

Undo Me: Confessional songs nearly always strike a chord with me...but musically this song is more edgy than sad, making it sound as if...she is mad with herself for messing up again. -8.5/10

Trinity: "you in the mirror/starin' back at me/oh conscience, let me be" - who hasn't felt like that from time to time? -8/10

In The Name: This is a poppy tune that I love to sing along to...reminds me not to "trust in the things I do," but rather in God. -9/10

His Grace Is Sufficient: "When I'm down/I search

every mistake/I'm looking for new regrets/sometimes I forget/...that

his grace is sufficient for me." I felt like Jenny had crawled inside my head and wrote a song about it. -9.5/10

Martyrs and Thieves: I hardly have words for this song, as it evokes so many emotions. It was one of the few things I clung to while in the throes of depression. It starts out sad, regretful even...and climbs out, hopeful, calm, warm... -11/10

Romans: Perhaps the most poppy song on the album and so much fun to sing and dance to! Lyrics are not the best, but it makes up for it by being musically charming. -8/10

Refine Me: Slow and calming...asking to be refined. Sorta puts me to sleep, not in a bad way though. -7/10

Hold Me Now: Calming without being boring. The lyrics are beautiful poetry and bring to mind very vivid pictures. 8.5/10

Visions: I'm glad this song is at towards the end of the album (the only song after it is the reprise of Faithful), as I'm usually not listening by then or have fallen asleep (when I listened to it right as I was getting into bed!). Just sort of boring lyrics set to a decent track. -5/10"
