Gordon Jenkins - music's "forgotten man"!
aquariuslib | 03/27/2000
(4 out of 5 stars)

"It is great to have a few tracks from Gordon Jenkins's wonderful musical love story and ode to New York of the 4O's, MANHATTAN TOWER,on a CD. I possess both the original DECCA vinyl version as well as the later extended and even more complete version on a CAPITOL vinyl LP. I would be wonderful to have the latter issued on CD! And what about all the other great Gordon Jenkins re-cordings: the musical fantasy "SEVEN DREAMS" (Decca)(Who can forget The Pink Houseboat track?), "Gordon Jenkins plays his own compositions" (DECCA), "I Live Alone" (entire CAPITOL album on vinyl), THE LETTER, a musical narrative with Judy Garland and John Ireland (CAPITOL- vinyl) and a few more....He was one of America's most striking arrangers and conductors (check Sinatra's and Nat Cole's albums. Nobody could match Gordon Jenkins and David Rose) WHEN IT CAME TO STRING SECTIONS. The album under review contains a few very commercial nonsense ditties...but My Foolish Heart, I can Dream Can't I?, Again, Maybe You'll be There and the Manhattan TOwer excerpts make up for it. I have ALWAYS been a Jenkins admirer and own every recording by his orchestra & chorus I could lay my hands on over the past 4O years. Lucky me!"

"As a fan of the original recording of Manhatten Tower, I thoroghly enjoyed the tease of it in this copy. The fine quality of the cd is a plus to my ears. When will they release the original recording of Manhatten Tower? That is the question."
